Vanmahotsav and a Master class on “Forests for the Future: Combating Climate Change One Tree at a Time” at GRKCL

The NSS Unit and the Environment & Biodiversity Club of VVM’s G. R. Kare College of Law, Margao, in collaboration with the Goa Forest Department, organized Vanmahotsav and a Master class on “Forests for the Future: Combating Climate Change One Tree at a Time” on 15th July 2026 at the G. D. Auditorium.

The programme commenced with a warm welcome to the resource person, Vice-Principal Dr. Maria Goretti Simoes. The gathering was introduced to the significance of Vanmahotsav, an annual tree-planting festival observed across the country to foster environmental consciousness and encourage public participation in afforestation initiatives.

The keynote address was delivered by Shri Mahanand Paryekar, Deputy Range Forest Officer and In-charge Range Forest Officer, Mobile Squad, Margao. Through an engaging and informative presentation, he highlighted the indispensable role of forests in maintaining ecological balance and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change. He explained how forests act as natural carbon sinks, regulate climatic conditions, conserve biodiversity, prevent soil erosion, and safeguard water resources.

The session also familiarized students with the various conservation measures undertaken by the Goa Forest Department for the protection and sustainable management of forest resources. The interactive discussion that followed enabled students to seek clarification on issues relating to wildlife conservation, forest protection laws, and community participation in environmental preservation. The resource person responded to the queries with practical examples, making the session highly engaging and insightful.

The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks was given by Assistant Professor Harshard Bandodkar, expressing sincere appreciation to the Goa Forest Department, the resource person, the organizing committees, faculty members, NSS volunteers, and students for their enthusiastic participation and valuable contribution towards the success of the event.

A plantation drive was also conducted on the college premises with the active participation of students, NSS volunteers, and faculty members. The initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness and encourage the importance of maintaining a green and sustainable campus. Participants planted a variety of saplings in different areas of the college and pledged to care for them. The drive was carried out with great enthusiasm and teamwork, making it a successful event that reinforced the values of environmental conservation and social responsibility.
