
Commemoration of Goa Revolution Day at GRKCL
The Political Science Academium of VVM’s Govind Ramnath Kare College of Law, Margao-Goa, organised a guest lecture to commemorate Goa Revolution Day on the topic titled “Revisiting 18th June: History, Legacy and Significance” on 3rd July 2026 at 12:00 Noon in the G. D. Auditorium.The Vice Principal, Dr. Maria Goretti Simoes, delivered the welcome address, extending a cordial welcome to the distinguished resource person, faculty, and students. In her address, she highlighted the importance of organising academic lectures that connect students with eminent scholars and experts. She emphasised that understanding history is essential for appreciating the social, political, and cultural evolution of society and encouraged students to actively engage with the lecture.
The guest speaker for the session was Mr. Prajal Sakhardande, Associate Professor and Head, Department of History, Dhempe College (Autonomous), an eminent historian, researcher, and author known for his significant contributions to the study and preservation of Goan history.
In his address, Mr. Sakhardande began by presenting a comprehensive overview of Goa’s historical evolution, tracing its journey from the pre-Portuguese period through Portuguese colonial rule and eventually to Goa’s Liberation. He emphasised that history should be accepted as it is, based on authentic historical evidence, archival records, and factual research rather than personal opinions or ideological interpretations. He encouraged students to develop an objective and evidence-based understanding of history.

The speaker then focused on the significance of 18th June 1946, explaining how the Civil Disobedience Movement initiated by Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia and Dr. Juliao Menezes marked a turning point in Goa’s freedom struggle. He highlighted the courage displayed by ordinary Goans who challenged Portuguese colonial rule and explained how the movement inspired widespread political consciousness and resistance that eventually culminated in Goa’s Liberation in 1961.
Throughout the lecture, Mr. Sakhardande illustrated how historical events must be studied within their political and social contexts. He stressed the importance of preserving Goa’s rich historical heritage and encouraged students to appreciate the role of historians in reconstructing the past through rigorous research and authentic documentation. The lecture offered valuable insights into Goa’s identity, democratic values, and the continuing relevance of historical awareness in contemporary society.
The program was compèred by Ms. Amalia Noronha, a student of S.Y.B.A.LL.B. The program concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms. Ashmita Naik, Assistant Professor and Faculty In-charge, Political Academium.
